CECAM-Lorentz

The CECAM-Lorentz workshops are part of our collaboration with the Lorentz Center in Leiden, aiming at daring initiatives in modeling and simulation at different scales. The workshops are held since 2014, alternately at Lorentz Center in Leiden and at CECAM in Lausanne.

Key Topics to be Covered:

Adjusting the Software lifecycle to include Green AI. This topic delves into the integration of Green AI principles within the entire software development life cycle. It addresses the need for a holistic approach, emphasizing the importance of incorporating eco-friendly considerations not only in the coding phase but also during design, testing, deployment, and maintenance. By aligning the software development life cycle with sustainable practices, we can ensure that the entire process contributes to environmental conservation.
Carbon-Aware AI/Software Development. Raise awareness regarding current best practices among developers about the environmental impact of software and guide them in crafting code with minimized carbon footprints. This involves optimizing algorithms, selecting energy-efficient platforms, and considering the environmental implications throughout the software development life cycle.
Education of Green AI/Software. We want to discuss how the computer science curriculums need to be adjusted in order to make the next generation of tech professionals aware of energy efficiency development practices. We also want to use this workshop as an opportunity to create a hub to share educational content that can help teach Sustainable Software Engineering worldwide.
Strengthening Social Impact of Sustainable Tech. By inviting researchers from social science disciplines to the workshop, we aim to spark a meaningful interdisciplinary discussion on extending the influence of our current research beyond academic realms, actively engaging with social communities and the general public. The goal is to provide accessible tools for informed decision-making regarding interactions with carbon-intensive software applications. Through the discourse, we seek to explore innovative ways of improving the communication and dissemination of our findings, fostering a collective effort to make impactful strides towards a more sustainable, environmentally conscious, and cost-efficient digital future.
